The PTA Thrift Shop receives a large amount of art through the doors on a regular basis. Displaying the art has always been a difficult challenge given space constraints. In early fall of 2004, Barbara Jessie-Black and Valecia Jones decided to take a space in the Carrboro store and devote it completely to art. The grand opening of the Carrboro Thrift Shop Art Gallery was October 20.
Converting the former storage space was no small task. The room had to be emptied, the walls painted, hanging fixtures put in place. In the midst of the renovation the Thrift Shop remained open, and goods were shuttled in and out as the space was utilized for bag day. Finally, everything was put back in place, art was hung and shelves were filled. |
On the day of the opening, final touches were completed as a crowd gathered in the hallway waiting for the unveiling.
Paintings, prints, posters and frames are all available in the Art Gallery, as well as other items for home decor. There are pieces of original art, pottery, and even a section of items perfect for decorating a child's room.
Track lighting is in the future plans to emphasis highlighting the artwork. The collection will constantly be changing, so be sure to check back to see the latest items available at the Carrboro store Art Gallery.
